Their new release ‘Alive/Arc’ is a game of two wholly different sides. Mind Vortex showcase their enviable range of skills: perfectly executed songbased composition AND outrageously huge, speaker splintering bass bombs.
‘Alive’ is up first. Striking up with a starglazed synth and string hook that rises exponentially, we’re soon dropped into crisp guitar hooks and smooth vocals. As the synths and heated kicks rejoin the mix, it’s instant anthem time with plenty of opportunities to raise a lighter or two. As the vibrant hook gets heavier and the song develops, we find the bass becoming more textured, bursting with dynamics and true sense of sonic sentiment.
Next up, ‘Arc’: A quintessential rave hustler, it opens with rich warm rushworthy chords softly coerced you into a false sense of arm waving euphoria. This tune has such a beautiful emotioncaked intro and then BANG!: in they come with one of the most powerful payoffs we’ve heard for ages. A murder of basslines vie for your attention, ducking and diving and weaving and bobbing among each other, each one as brutish as the next. From spinemelting electrosoul to turbocharged bass shockout at the flip of a switch, it’s production techniques like this that attracted Mind Vortex to us in the first place.

Igniting with an all-out stomp-charged riff, the duo thrown down the weightiest of kicks and hypnotising bass riff that swings with nagging aggression: It’s a surefire way to lock heads deep into the groove before the almighty horns and spiralling psychedelia of the drop whisk everyone in a five mile radius away to facemelting worlds we never knew existed.
’Let It Go’, meanwhile, is the ultimate switch-flipper. Here we find DC Breaks flexing their lushest of sound sets with twinkling arpeggios, heart-melting keys and a dreamy, star-gazing lead line. Dropping into a rabble-rousing half-tempo D&B;/dubstep hybrid riff, it’s an instant crowd pleaser. But don’t go thinking this is it…. As the drop unfolds you’ll soon find yourself shocking out to a full turbo-charged version of the riff. / Nearly five years have elapsed since Truth’s seminal Deep Medi plate ‘The Fatman’ announced their arrival as serious talents on the international dubstep scene. In that time they have nurtured and developed their reputation as architects of the fiercest, sub-low beats that balance raw dancefloor-rupturing force with the meditative, eyes-down characteristics of dubstep’s earliest formative sound. Their output has been prolific whilst maintaining the highest of quality control; releases span Black Box, Argon, Boka, Wheel & Deal, Tempa and with their Aquatic Lab LP ‘Puppets’ they delivered classic album that hits as hard today as it did back then. In 2013 they remain at the forefront of dubstep innovation, possessing the ingenuity and creative drive to continue to push the sonic envelope with their innovative,bass-ravaged sounds. The latest chapter in their illustrious music careers sees two cuts of intense halfstep pressure released on New Moon Recordings, an imprint still riding high from the success of the NMN006 transmission provided by kiwi compatriots Perverse. ‘Iron Lung’ and ‘Medusa’ are up there with some of the deepest beats Truth have ever built, as they paint cavernous and paranoid soundscapes on top of supremely engineered dread basslines. There’s an element of cohesiveness across the two tracks with both utilising haunting vocal melodies to create an icy-cold, ghostly aesthetic that chills to the core; Truth have long been masters of layering beautiful voice-based harmonies in their music, and it works to great effect here. On ‘Medusa’, underneath the precise rigidity of the halfstep drum structure, they imbue so much movement and swing with the subs, as they jump and sink through varying frequencies with real buoyancy; it’s an absolutely killer bassline and something you really have to experience on a soundsystem. Similarly, on ‘Iron Lung’ the low-end is of course a focal point, with slow-burn oscillations providing some wicked syncopation. The beat is typically sparse and skeletal, but the intersection of a collection perfectly timed growls, pads, muted horns and quaint strikes of percussion all combine to create an intricately detailed piece that keeps you vigorously rocking from side to side. The 12” as a whole is another example of fresh, impeccably produced bassweight excellence from the duo, and another firm indicator that Truth’s signature sound is in the rudest of health. | | schließen |
