La La & the Boo Ya are Marf & Eddie, a sibling collaboration based in West Yorkshire, UK. They describe the music they create as “songs for dancefloors and kitchen tables”. Music is in their blood, and the eclectic flavours they grew up with have shaped their unpinnable sound. Be it their dad’s John Peel cassettes or their uncle’s ska band, family folk songs round the fire or mum’s car speakers pumping soul and reggae, big sister’s Smiths records or big bro’s jungle-mania – it’s all there, with plenty more to boot. They cut teeth with their skills and got hooked on bass music during the latter half of the 90s. At the tender age of 15, Eddie was resident DJ at a Leeds jungle night and went on to study Music Tech in Huddersfield. Around the same time Marf was giving her voice it’s first proper outing on the streets of Ireland and on returning home fell in love with the UK free party scene and festival circuit. It wasn’t until the late noughties that the two actually started writing and producing together as La La & the Boo Ya. It’s no surprise to learn that Eddie’s introcate rhythmic stylings are thanks to a teenage love of playing the drums, his signature style has beats fall over themselves like a half-cut body popper maintaining impossible balance. There’s a fair bit of genre teasing – flitting between electro, ragga, folk, break-beat, funk, dubstep and tear-out jungle. The basslines jump from dirty and distorted to bouncy and playful. It’s this sense of fun that binds together the creative flows of brother and sister. Marf has the lyrical ability to be sincere and tongue in cheek at the same time, part folk songstress and part rude gal – her husky tones pack a punch as, from song to song, she veers from the very personal to the downright political, discussing 21st century environments with sweet melodies and brutal honesty.LL&BY;’s first gig was offered by a promoter friend, who’d heard their bedroom produced muckabouts and had faith that they were worthy of entertaining a bass loving crowd. To have enough material to fill a half hour slot – LL&BY; had to write at least two thirds of their set specifically for the gig. And it’s kind of gone that way ever since. The novelty of decent homemade dance music accompanied by live vocals was enough to secure them regular gigs at local club nights and free parties. They accrued an underground following through shared mp3s of their lo-fi productions and eventually led to a number of festival slots. In 2010, a mutual friend introduced Congo Natty to the music of La La & the Boo Ya. Since then, Marf has appeared on stage at many a Congo Natty dance and his forthcoming album features his own take of La La & the Boo Ya’s ‘Junglist Soldiers’ as well as Marf’s guest vocalings throughout the album. LL&BY;’s sense of family and music as priority has secured a long lasting working relationship with the Congo Natty Fam and their debut single ‘Lioness’ is out March 2013 on the new Congo Natty Bass label. The single is going out as a double A side – the flipside being a Congo Natty / Vital Elements (Serial Killaz) remix featuring the UK’s dancehall queen Lady Chann. | | schließen |

/ Bristol-based producer Jinx in Dub is well known for delivering the rudeboy reggae skank across multiple bass music genres, from d’n'b to dubstep, breakbeat and beyond. Here he purloins the classic Michael Rose/Black Uhuru number Party Next Door and sends it spinning into jungle mayhem on the frenetic Amen in Session, in the process creating an instant badboy anthem. On the flip, Jinx links with Kanjah’s Seek and Find track which samples Massive Attack legend Horace Andy for another rolling, rastafarian floorkiller that slides in and out of dubby drum workout territory each time it drops. Classic sounds from a producer with a serious understandingof how to make the breakbeats kick, and another absolutely essential double-header for discerning record bags from Jungle Cakes. | | schließen |

/ For the 20th Samurai Red Seal 12" we welcome the grand master of breakbeats for his debut with Samurai Red Seal. Paradox now appears rarely outside his own labels so we are honoured to have him as a special guest on Samurai Red Seal. ’Scorpius’ is a potent, menacing, refurbishing of the golden years of DnB with the heaviest drums and bass on any tune in your set.’Crate Logic’ is perhaps the funkiest tune you will hear in the genre in 2013, built around an authentic funk break that is transformed into and unmistakeable Paradox groove. The full artwork dedicated sleeve is designed around the ethos and theme of the 12", reflecting the dusty crate groove and highlighting the lost artform of ‘crate digging’ in modern DnB. This will be the 147th Paradox 12" single! | | schließen |

Incl. "So Alone". / With previous on Phobia's Coded and Klute's Commercial Suicide, the guys have now secured a slot on one of 2012's runaway success stories of the scene: Program. With a distinctive floor-focussed sound and a growing repertoire of exciting new artists, Ram's sister joint is the ideal home for Chroma's pristine production and ruthless attention to the groove.
We kick off with 'Acetate', a deep croaky roller that pays homage to the formative days of jungle drum & bass where the highly sought after dubplate was the scene's gold standard. With its effortless roll and less-is-more motif, it's reminiscent of early Ram material from the turn of the century such (think Moving Fusion, think Shimon, think Andy C himself) but it's delivered with that all important contemporary crunch. The elements are devilishly simple but startlingly complex; just tight, chest-punching drums, hypnotising one note bass and a walloping sub.
'So Alone' flips the switch for a more wholesome, soulful scenario thanks to a breath-taking reggae vocal loop that doesn't sound dissimilar to Barrington Levy circa 'Broader Than Broadway'. Again, the elements are simple but devastatingly effective as the bassline swings with well-rounded glee and snake-like drums that do more driving than an Eddie Stobart driver.
Following fine joints from the likes of Kove, Frankee, LoKo, Wickaman and more, Program have proved themselves to be one of the strongest new labels of the year. Chroma's contribution is no exception and proves the trio to be a name to watch right now! | | schließen |

Incl. "You Can Be My Night". / If you ever wondered where all the really mammoth d ‘n’ b tunes went, the ones designed to have you bouncing off the walls (rather than reaching for that mug of filter coffee and stroking your hipster beard) Deekline & Ed Solo have the answer in the form of a double header of future-retro classics cut from their preposterously rocking forthcoming 21-track double album, Bounce ‘n’ Shake. First up, vocalist Top Cat drops in on the frenetic jungle-flavoured Bad Boys, the duo freshening up the famous reggae classic with tearing beats, dubby soundscapes and the beefiest of bassline dirt: drop this and watch them hit the ceiling! On the flip, You Can Be My Night is a piano-fuelled d ‘n’ b roller with a heavy jump up influence, sounding like the bastard offspring of Aphrodite and Omni Trio. Deep but driving, heady yet destructive, you’d find yourself declaring: “they don’t make ‘em like that any more” if it wasn’t for the fact that someone just did. | | schließen |
