/ The latest addition to the evergreen Sao Paulo drum & bass scene is Luciano Nitri. After exploding out of the gate in the last couple of years, Nitri’s beats have found homes at various labels including Program, All Sorts and Grid. He has swiftly made a name for himself as a diverse, eclectic producer, not afraid to hide behind clichés or subgenres. He makes music for its own sake, with devastating results. ?
His music has been picked up by Andy C, Dave Owen, Random Movement and more, and now he is bringing the Brazilian heat to Horizons, with Quintana and Route.
Quintana starts with some bounding bass kicks, underlying a sweeping female vocal sample. In the middle come some electronic blips and clicks, before the track drops down into a rough and ready main body, where things are stripped back to a minimal level. Nitri controls the board, acting as an overseer to a number of different elements. The feel of the track is one of sparseness, minimalism and craft, but Nitri still manages to wring out the funk and atmosphere in the arrangement. The vocals slide back in later, alongside some neat percussion charges and electric stabs.
You’ll find the Route to Horizons’ latest release, with Nitri as your guide, on the flip. A shimmering, multi-layered opening will greet you, fading in and out as the cut gathers momentum. Spacey, hypnotic and mysterious all at the same time, Route is Nitri gone intergalactic. Off-kilter but addictive throughout, the Brazilian maestro takes you through time by opening tiny windows onto different sounds. Here a snare, there an Amen, next a bass passage, always something new, always something different. Despite this voyage, Route never loses its way, much like its creator it is always striving to confound and to delight.
Nitri has been much lauded across the press for his skill and potential, now it’s time to fully appraise yourself of his wares, with Quintana/Route. | | schließen |

/ Late Night Caller’ and ‘Fusion’ carry the quintessential rave ingredients that drum & bass was founded on: energy, clarity and creativity. Incidentally, both have been absolutely caned by Ram head honcho Andy C since Bladerunner sent them to him last Autumn.
First up, ‘Late Night Caller’. A bonafide rave blazer, it opens with a series of euphoric pads, lush piano strokes and heart-melting vocals. Then, just as you’ve set your watches to spine-tingle o’clock… BOOM: in comes a searing bassline, ripping through the mix, rising and rising with raw low-frequency fusion before cascading back down the tonal scale into deep, dark chaos. The beautiful breakdown allows for a momentary cause for rush-ridden reflection before the bass-powered drop ignites and carnage ensues at an even higher level than before.
‘Fusion’ showcases Bladerunner’s deeper, more pensive side. Armed with a palette of mournful minor chords, it’s almost as if the synths are weeping at his very touch. A wormhole bassline slithers into the fray, groaning a subtle Q&A; over a relentless groove of crisp high-hats and chest-press kicks. A head nod to formative Ram releases from the likes of Origin Unknown, Ram Trilogy and Moving Fusion, look up the term ‘roller’ in next year’s Oxford English Dictionary and it will simply read ‘Fusion’.
Two rocket-fuelled rollers, two more reasons to keep locked onto one of the most exciting new labels in drum & bass. Program are firing on all cylinders… And this is just the beginning! | | schließen |

La La & the Boo Ya are Marf & Eddie, a sibling collaboration based in West Yorkshire, UK. They describe the music they create as “songs for dancefloors and kitchen tables”. Music is in their blood, and the eclectic flavours they grew up with have shaped their unpinnable sound. Be it their dad’s John Peel cassettes or their uncle’s ska band, family folk songs round the fire or mum’s car speakers pumping soul and reggae, big sister’s Smiths records or big bro’s jungle-mania – it’s all there, with plenty more to boot. They cut teeth with their skills and got hooked on bass music during the latter half of the 90s. At the tender age of 15, Eddie was resident DJ at a Leeds jungle night and went on to study Music Tech in Huddersfield. Around the same time Marf was giving her voice it’s first proper outing on the streets of Ireland and on returning home fell in love with the UK free party scene and festival circuit. It wasn’t until the late noughties that the two actually started writing and producing together as La La & the Boo Ya. It’s no surprise to learn that Eddie’s introcate rhythmic stylings are thanks to a teenage love of playing the drums, his signature style has beats fall over themselves like a half-cut body popper maintaining impossible balance. There’s a fair bit of genre teasing – flitting between electro, ragga, folk, break-beat, funk, dubstep and tear-out jungle. The basslines jump from dirty and distorted to bouncy and playful. It’s this sense of fun that binds together the creative flows of brother and sister. Marf has the lyrical ability to be sincere and tongue in cheek at the same time, part folk songstress and part rude gal – her husky tones pack a punch as, from song to song, she veers from the very personal to the downright political, discussing 21st century environments with sweet melodies and brutal honesty. LL&BY;’s first gig was offered by a promoter friend, who’d heard their bedroom produced muckabouts and had faith that they were worthy of entertaining a bass loving crowd. To have enough material to fill a half hour slot – LL&BY; had to write at least two thirds of their set specifically for the gig. And it’s kind of gone that way ever since. The novelty of decent homemade dance music accompanied by live vocals was enough to secure them regular gigs at local club nights and free parties. They accrued an underground following through shared mp3s of their lo-fi productions and eventually led to a number of festival slots. In 2010, a mutual friend introduced Congo Natty to the music of La La & the Boo Ya. Since then, Marf has appeared on stage at many a Congo Natty dance and his forthcoming album features his own take of La La & the Boo Ya’s ‘Junglist Soldiers’ as well as Marf’s guest vocalings throughout the album. LL&BY;’s sense of family and music as priority has secured a long lasting working relationship with the Congo Natty Fam and their debut single ‘Lioness’ is out March 2013 on the new Congo Natty Bass label. The single is going out as a double A side – the flipside being a Congo Natty / Vital Elements (Serial Killaz) remix featuring the UK’s dancehall queen Lady Chann. | | schließen |
